Kaputaş or Patara? Choose a beach for the day you want
A turquoise cove or a long sandy shoreline. Compare access, walking and your group’s needs before choosing a beach day from Kalkan.

It can be difficult to choose between Kaputaş and Patara when planning a beach day near Kalkan. Instead of squeezing both into one outing, decide what you want: a shorter stop in a cove or time to walk along a broad sandy coast. Comfort matters as much as the colour of the water.
Kaputaş: a cove reached by steps
Kaputaş lies on the Kalkan–Kaş coastal road where a canyon meets the sea. Access from the road is by steps, as described in GoTürkiye’s regional guide. Pack with the climb back up in mind, not just the descent.
A light bag, easy-to-carry towel and suitable shoes help. Consider the steps carefully if you have a pushchair, lots of equipment or anyone with reduced mobility in your group. Parking arrangements and queues can change, so do not plan on stopping at an arbitrary point beside the road.
Kaputaş may suit a shorter swimming stop on a day heading towards Kaş. Still allow enough time for arrival, changing and the journey back. A quick stop often takes longer when several people are travelling together.
Patara: room for a longer walk
Patara offers a more expansive sandy setting. You can plan a beach day, a walk or a separate visit to the ancient city. The official Patara routes introduce these different possibilities.
A long beach does not mean every part has the same shade or facilities. Decide where you will spend your time and how far it is from your transport. With children, it may be easier to settle your belongings before setting off on a longer stroll.
Respect the protected landscape, local signs and current visiting conditions. The dunes are not a viewpoint to drive onto. Vegetation and marked nesting areas should shape where you walk and sit.
What should families consider?
A photograph cannot tell you whether the sea will be calm on the day. Reassess wind, waves and local warnings when you arrive. Supervision and swimming decisions should follow actual conditions at either beach.
If shade, toilets, food or equipment hire are essential for your group, check the current arrangements. Do not treat an old review as a promise of a particular service or price. A return journey during a child’s usual rest time can matter just as much as the beach itself.
Match the beach to your plans
Choose Kaputaş for a cove visit if the stepped access suits everyone. Give Patara more time if you want a sandy walk or to explore the surrounding area. If history is part of the plan, pick only the Patara stops you can enjoy comfortably.
A pool day at your villa is also a perfectly good choice if the group needs less preparation and more rest. For evening light, read our Patara dunes guide. For another way to enjoy the coast, consider a Kekova boat day.
